Hello,

I posted this in the OS Customization forum but I figured I'd post here as well being that this is a support forum.  Here's the original post:

I was hoping someone on here could help me out.  I'm running the latest version of IconPackager (3.99.146  x86).  When I have this running my default Vista icons work as normal.  When I uninstall this program, a lot of icons change over to the blank document icon, some I can fix, some I can't.  When I re-install the program, everything works as normal.  Is anyone else having this issue?  Does anyone know of a fix?  Please help me if you can.  Reason I uninstalled it is that I was having some software issues and trying to find the issue.  Thanks for your help in advance.

If you can help in any way I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

I used IconPackager through Impulse and a lot of my icons have now changed to blank images. Even the shortcut to Impulse! I've changed it to default Windows Icons in IconPackager and repaired, rebuilt etc, but no luck. I am using Vista. Even if I right click, properties, and manually change the icon it doesn't hold. HELP. Thank you.

Would someone try creating a fresh administrator's user account in Vista and seeing if all their missing icons are visible there? It could offer a temporary workaround should this work.

My icons didn't return when I created a new admin account. I can see the correct icon if I right click the shortcut, properties, change icon, but the correct icon is not on the .exe file for most of my files. Also, I cannot change the icon when I right click either. The icon flashes but stays blank.

It was an idea. I have XP SP3 and that has worked to solve other similar problems. I'm assuming you didn't have Icon Packager installed at the time you created the new user account?

I hadn't uninstalled Icon Packager - I was worried I would lose my few remaining icons if I did. I'll have to get used to blank icons I suppose, until something gets fixed. Knock on wood.

I was able to get most of my icons back, but not all of them.
I hope that you have better luck then I had!

Just because . . on the settings tab everyone has done the repair options in the lower left, right?

Yes. It does not rectify my situation.

You need to download Stardock Central, install Iconpackager through SDC then uninstall it and reboot your computer. I've had this issue for quite some time with Impulse uninstalling Iconpackager incorrectly.

If so is the case, they need to fix the removed by Impulse.

The problem is related to a laptop I borrowed from work. And I really need to fix this.

Most people would uninstall via Windows' Programs and Features, which should work ok I think... not sure.

Are we going to get an update from the dev's at all about these missing icon problems?

I managed to get all of my icons back again, by first uninstalling IconPackager using Stardock Central (not Impulse) and then going through the registry and manually removing every instance of the word iconpackager. I had restarted Vista after uninstalling the program but there were still a lot of references to it in the registry. I still had no icons after restarting again, so I reinstalled IconPackager 4 using Stardock Central and chose the windows default package and every blank icon changed to the proper one! I am tempted to try another package, but might wait a few days.

Thank you to everybody for their suggestions. Alix

I am glad it worked for someone else too!  I uninstalled Impulse myself.  Things were working fine until then...

I too have this problem.  It is just completely amazing.  I don't have a restore point I can go to and I don't have the time to do a reinstall of Vista.  I guess I can try the Stardock Central method.  I don't really care for Impulse, anyway; that is assuming I can even get it to load.
